LANSING, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – A new invasive species has been found in Michigan.
The Mchigan Department of Natural Resources says live red swamp crayfish, also called Louisiana crayfish, were caught in Sunset Lake in Vicksburg in southwest Michigan and a retention pond in Novi.
The DNR caught 111 of them in Novi on Monday, July 17. The agency is working to determine how the species got introduced into the two waterways.
In late June, a live Asian carp was pulled from a Chicago waterway just nine miles from Lake Michigan, raising new concerns about the invasive species.
Republican Congressman Fred Upton responded to the discovery by calling on the Trump administration to immediately release a study conducted by the Army Corps of Engineers on how to modify the Brandon Road lock and dam to permanently seal off the connection between the Illinois River and Lake Michigan.
