THREE RIVERS (WKZO-AM/FM) — One teenager in a group of young fishermen who decided to put down their poles and beat the heat by swimming across the St. Joseph River didn’t make it out alive.
The body of a 16-year-old was recovered from the silty water off Broadway Street in Three Rivers by the St. Joseph County Dive Team at about 3:35 p.m. Wednesday.
Undersheriff Mark Lillywhite calls it a sad situation. He said dispatchers received a 911 call around 1:30 p.m.
An autopsy is planned but its expected to be ruled an accidental drowning.
The name of the victim is being withheld until family members are notified.
