KALAMAZOO (WKZO AM/FM) — A man who reportedly has a previous arrest for ethnic intimidation has been identified as the person who left an improvised explosive device near a lake in Climax Township last month.
The device was a smaller version of the kind of homemade anti-personnel weapon used by the Boston Marathon Bombers, designed to spew shrapnel in all directions, containing nails, nuts and bolts and shards of metal.
Undersheriff Pali Matyas says it would probably kill everything and everybody out to five or ten feet and leave people just beyond that wounded.
He says the ATF and the FBI joined raids on two locations that led them to two other spots where they finally found their suspect.
They have not released the name of the suspect, nor have they taken him into custody, but they say he has been cooperative and they don’t consider him to be a terrorist or a threat.
Still the say either state or federal charges are likely for making the IED.
