BATTLE CREEK (WKZO AM/FM) — There has been a birth announcement in Battle Creek, a baby girl that weighed 190 pounds and was over 6 feet tall at birth.
Both mother and baby Giraffe are said to be just fine.
The Binder Park Zoo says it’s the tenth Giraffe that has been born at their facility over the years. They have named her Kijana.
She will join the other Giraffes on the Zoo’s savanna at their Wild Africa Exhibit later this month.
Brett Linsley, Manager of Wildlife, Conservation and Education at Binder Park Zoo. “This is a significant birth because there are so few reticulated giraffes remaining in the wild and because the conservation status of this subspecies has yet to be classified.”
The population of giraffes in the wild is declining rapidly due to poaching and loss of habitat, dropping from 140,000 at the turn of the century to just 90,000 today.
That’s why they say this birth is reason to celebrate.
