KALAMAZOO (WKZO AM/FM) — Kalamazoo County has unveiled their preliminary plans for a new Animal Shelter to replace the undersized and aging facility they currently operate near the County Jail.
Director of Animal Control Steve Lawrence says their current facility is out of date, and most of the animals they shelter there end up with diseases because of the poor sanitary and ventilation systems.
He says they have the opportunity to design and build the best animal shelter in the state. Lawrence says they have already visited a number of other new animal shelters and are learning what works and what doesn’t.
He says a larger facility makes it possible to make it a real community center.
It was revealed last night that the County has about $5-million to spend. It will be built on six acres of county owned land on Lamont Drive, next to their current location.
They will be working with a long list of voluntary and non-profit organizations like the Humane Society and animal rescue organizations, to develop the best design for the new facility.
