KALAMAZOO (WKZO AM/FM) — It’s National Doughnut Day, but this isn’t just some “Hallmark Holiday” designed to move products. This has a real history.
The Chicago Salvation Army established the day to honor women who served doughnuts to soldiers during World War One. The holiday has been celebrated on the first Friday of June since 1938.
A number of shops are giving out free doughnuts. Shops like Krispy Creme and Fractured Prune are giving out one free doughnut with no purchase necessary. But, some other places like Dunkin’ Donuts require the purchase of a drink.
Sweetwater’s doesn’t give away doughnuts, they go one step better. They give a percentage of their profits on the sale of everything on Doughnut Day to the Salvation Army.
They also make a special t-shirt commemorating the day that staff wear, and make enough extras for the Salvation Army to sell. The shirts will be available at the Art events downtown this evening.
