BATTLE CREEK (WKZO-AM/FM) — The Battle Creek Police Department will break ground on its new headquarters Thursday.
Inspector Kathy Schley said the current station, which was built on North Division Street in 1970, has structural problems. It’s also far too small.
“Our current facility was built for approximentally 60 employees,” Schley said. “We’re at 115. We have offices in closets and we have people double-stacked.”
The new HQ will feature more space for officers, new technology and a community center.
“We’re really trying to make it about community and our employees,” Schley said.
Construction in the adjacent parking lot on the $15.5 million project should be done in 18 months.
The ceremony starts at 10 a.m.
