KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM/FM) — The Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office is urging boaters and other lake enthusiasts to take it safe over the Memorial Day weekend.
Undersheriff Pali Matyas says it’s prime time for deputies who patrol the county’s lakes.
“With Memorial Day kicking off the boating season, it becomes front-and-center on our agenda,” Matyas said.
And that agenda this weekend will include a focus on deterring reckless waverunner use.
“They’re just a total blast, but some people get on them and don’t have the self-control and courtesy to use them in a respectable manner,” Matyas said.
He also says, on the water, it’s preparation that prevents tragedy. He’s urging boaters to tell people where they’re going beforehand and to ensure that there are an adequate number of life vests on the vessel.
