KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM/FM) — Nearly 100,000 women will be hard at work at Habitat for Humanity sites throughout the country this week as part of National Women Build Week, including women here in Kalamazoo.
Ann Kilkuskie with the Kalamazoo Valley Habitat For Humanity chapter says its ninth-consecutive “Women Build” project starts Tuesday.
“We’re going to be beginning construction on a brand new home in the Milwood Neighborhood,” Kilkuskie said. “It will be a three-bedroom home, highly energy-efficient, and quality construction like all of our Habitat homes.”
Kilkuskie said the aim of the week, which is held each year before Mother’s Day, is empowerment, and also to get women interested in construction and the non-profit.
“It’s designed to inspire women to come out and join us on build sites, to help us advocate for affordable housing, and to learn some new things and put them to work in the community.”
Habitat has been holding “Women Build” events since 1991.
