BATTLE CREEK (WKZO-AM/FM) — It’s a city hall drama involving jealousy, romance and deception that Battle Creek had hoped to put behind it.
Kalamazoo Federal Judge Paul Maloney has dismissed a motion by the city for a summary judgement to a lawsuit brought by former police officials James Saylor and Maria Alonso. Both held high ranks and were long time veterans in different offices in the Battle Creek Police Department.
They were apparently romantically involved and while one administrator determined it wasn’t a problem, the next one did, claiming it was creating a “hostile work environment” and fired them both three years ago.
They sued.
Part of the suit was dismissed last year, but Maloney ruled there are enough disputed facts that it needs to be resolved by a jury. Saylor and Alonso are now married. Most, but not all of the other players involved have left the community.
