KALAMAZOO (WKZO AM/FM) — You think you pay a lot in taxes.
Kalamazoo is locked in a dispute over property taxes with Zoetis, its second biggest tax payer, who claims the city treasury overcharged them by $2.5-million and they want it back.
Zoetis is the former animal health division of Pfizer which split off into its own company a few years ago and owns labs and offices and other buildings downtown.
Zoetis claims that their properties should be valued at around $34-million, and not the $44-million claimed by the city.
The City Commission has just approved a deal with the Attorney General’s office to split the cost of hiring an appraiser.
He or she will take a look at the properties, render a judgement, and if the two sides don’t settle before the dispute goes to trial, the appraiser will be prepared to testify when the matter goes to court.
