KALAMAZOO (WKZO AM/FM) — The United Way released its ALICE study this week, which shows that there are a lot more people in Michigan living in financial distress than most think.
They claim that while the employment rate may be down to 3 or 4 percent in some parts of the state, the jobs people hold down are low paying and about 40% of the population is just barely scraping by.
That’s what they call the “ALICE” level: “Asset Limited, income constrained, employed”.
Matt Lynn, with the local chapter of the United Way says in Kalamazoo County that number depends on where you live. If you live in Texas Township, just 10% are living paycheck to paycheck.
If you live on the north side of Kalamazoo, well over 60% are just one visit to the auto repair shop or the emergency room from financial distress.
