CROSWELL (WKZO AM/FM) — If you were riding along I-94 at the right times this weekend, you may have seen convoys of trucks heading west, hauling hay and other farm supplies.
They are Michigan farmers and truckers from the thumb area, headed to fire-ravaged Kansas and Texas to provide relief to devastated farmers.
Fires in early march scorched 625 square miles of Kansas, and there were deaths.
40 trucks left Croswell early on Sunday, receiving a State Police escort as they passed through west Michigan. Smaller convoys left on Friday and Saturday.
The volunteers from Michigan are expected to meet up with other convoys from Ontario, Ohio and Pennsylvania along the way.
They plan to arrive in the devastated area sometime Monday evening.
Farmers and truckers from four counties in the Upper Peninsula have also been collecting hay and other supplies and plan to make a run for Kansas this coming weekend.
