LANSING (WKZO AM/FM) — Safety concerns about Enbridge Line 5 under the Straits of Mackinac drew over 200 protestors to yesterday’s meeting of the state’s Pipeline Safety Advisory Board.
It was a vocal and at times, disruptive crowd. One of them coated himself and his grandson in cake batter, simulating an oil spill to make a point of what the wildlife might look like if there was ever a rupture in the pipeline.
The Board was there to hear Enbridge’s explanation on new reports that an outer glass coating had eroded away in 18 places along the five mile stretch of underwater pipe, and that currents in the Straits were stronger than previously reported.
Enbridge claims that that outer shell was only meant to protect the pipe during transport, and that another glass layer and a ceramic coating provide the bulk of the corrosion prevention.
