KALAMAZOO (WKZO AM/FM) — Kalamazoo Township Trustees have unanimously endorsed the idea of creating a Kalamazoo County I.D. for use by citizens who can’t get a State Driver’s License or State I.D.
Everybody needs picture I.D. but not everyone can get one. There are a lot of reasons they may not be accessible. Residents either don’t drive, are too young or too old, returning inmates or foster children or are not U.S. citizens.
Larry Provancher, a former County Commissioner who proposed the I.D. says it adds up to a sizable proportion of the local population, depending on which estimate you listen to. He says they range from 16,000 to 27,500 in Kalamazoo County alone.
Backers of the ID Proposal will be seeking a similar resolution from the Portage City Council this evening. The Kalamazoo County Board will receive an update from the Task Force next Tuesday.
