LANSING (WKZO AM/FM) — A proposed Michigan law designed to protect pilots from laser pointers may be going where no law has gone before.
Michigan would be the 17th state to outlaw the use of laser pointers around aircraft and the first in the nation to prevent the public from using particle beam weapons and sonic guns against aircraft.
Co-sponsor Klint Kesto says the legislation looks ahead to the day when such technology is weaponized. He says you can’t be too prepared when it comes to technology.
Star Trek had ‘phasers’ but for now there is no such thing as a particle beam weapon.
There are a few particle beam generators but they have never gotten the particles to fly much further than a few centimeters.
There are sonic devices used by the military and police that can direct sound like a focused bull horn to disperse crowds, send messages or scare wildlife, but nothing that could impact a plane.
