KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM/FM) — A first-of-its-kind program to solve homelessness in Kalamazoo for families with kids is off to a good start, according to officials who oversee the program.
The funds were approved by voters last year. Housing Commission Chair Dave Anderson said they have been able to put a roof over the heads of dozens of families so far and their aim is to eventually see that every child has a place to live.
He says we should think of them as our own homegrown refugees and they need help.
Michelle Davis with Housing Resources Incorporated said the problem has become finding enough low income homes in the area, and landlords who want to participate.
She said they have the money for a change, and now can’t find the units. What makes this program unique is that they help subsidize rent for a year and then put the parents on a self-improvement program, and connect them with agencies so when that year ends, they can afford their own housing.
