PENNFIELD TOWNSHIP (WKZO-AM/FM) — A pole barn went up in flames in Pennfield Township and threatened to take some of its neighbors up with it late Thursday.
The loss of the structure will be painful for its owner, but the bigger loss was found inside. There were reportedly over a half-dozen muscle cars and historic vehicles stored in the building that were destroyed.
Firefighters got the call just before 7 p.m. to rush to the property at 8223 Calvin Road and found flames coming from all of the windows, fed by fuel stored in the barn.
Firefighters had to retreat from the building and evacuate neighbors for a couple of hours when they learned that tanks of nitromethane and other types of fuel were also being stored in the structure and could explode.
There were no injuries reported. The cause will be investigated and the losses are being totaled.
