LANSING (WKZO-AM/FM) — The State Board of Education has joined all the parents, school administrators and state lawmakers who are taking a stand against the school closures proposed by Gov. Rick Snyder’s School Reform Office.
That includes two elementary schools in Kalamazoo.
Both Democrats and Republicans on the panel voted 6-1 to ask the SRO to rescind the 38 school closure notices that are currently pending.
The trustees cited research that shows a school closure can be disruptive for students and traumatic for communities. The statement also demands that the governor restore the SRO to the Michigan Department of Education, rather than under his direct control.
