KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM/FM) — Western Michigan University and former Broncos head football coach P.J. Fleck have signed an agreement over “Row the Boat,” giving Fleck full ownership of the mantra.
Western will retain the right to use the motto in football materials and displays, but Fleck has agreed to make an annual $10,000 scholarship donation to his former employer to use it at the University of Minnesota.
The gift is in addition to an earlier $50,000 commitment from Fleck.
The mantra is personal to Fleck. He came up with it after the death of his infant son. It became integrated into nearly all facets of Bronco football after he was hired to lead the program in 2012.
Fleck left for Minneapolis after guiding the Broncos to an undefeated regular season and Cotton Bowl berth.
