KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — Windy weather caused a number of power outages, including one that blacked out a large section of downtown Kalamazoo early Saturday evening.
Sunday’s winds, which ranged from 40 to 50 mph, huffed, puffed and blew down two walls at a long-vacant building on Porter Street at 5 p.m. Sunday, forcing road closures.
The collapse sent debris flying out into the roadway, as one wall fell in and the other fell out of the building’s footprint, taking out a power pole. There were no reported injuries.
The city says the two-story brick structure has been vacant for about 20 years, in disrepair and structurally unsound for years.
Consumers Energy crews worked into the night to restore the power line. Still ahead is a full assessment of the damaged structure to determine if it’s in danger of collapsing again.
