LANSING (WKZO-AM) — A bill that would let a company count an Indiana worker to qualify for a tax break or other business incentive offered by Michigan has just cleared the Senate.
Michigan offers a variety of economic assistance programs available to firms opening new plants in the state, but only if they create “qualified new jobs.” One of those qualifications currently is that the job goes to a Michigan resident.
The change backed by Sen. John Proos, R-St. Joseph, would let the firms include jobs going to Indiana residents who commute to work when they apply for incentives and have to fill in the line that reads “How many jobs will this create?”
He says it will help border counties, which he claims are at a disadvantage without this bill. The legislation now heads to the House for their consideration.
