KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — Two women from Alabama are in custody after they were allegedly caught stealing mail from Mailboxes in the Winchell neighborhood near Parkview on Kalamazoo’s west side.
Public Safety was initially called to a house on Kensington Thursday night at 8:15 by a resident who said that a 4-year-old child who was improperly dressed for last night’s frigid conditions came to their door and reported they had been left in a nearby car by their mother.
Arriving officers found the 29-year-old woman and were beginning a child neglect investigation when they got another call that a resident had spotted a woman stealing mail on Lorraine Street nearby.
That 27-year-old woman was tracked down by a K-9 and arrested.
The PSO’s quickly learned that the two women had traveled to Michigan with the child in a box truck that had been stolen in Alabama and were stealing mail, looking for money.
For now they will be staying in the Kalamazoo County Jail, one of them is being held for child neglect, the other for larceny and they both share car theft charges. The child was handed over to child protective services.
