GRAND RAPIDS (WKZO-AM) — The Better Business Bureau of west Michigan is advising people to file their tax returns as soon as they can…to avoid losing their refund to a scam artist.
Hackers are getting their hands on W-2 forms and either filling out tax forms pretending to be the employees, or selling the forms in bulk to other scammers who fill them out for the refunds…your refunds.
Likely targets include school districts, health care organizations, chain restaurants, temporary staffing agencies, tribal organizations and nonprofits according to the IRS.
Just such a pfishing hack victimized hundreds of employees at Kalamazoo College last year.
There may not be much you can do to stop the hack, but you can foil the scammer by getting to the IRS first.
