KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — A Western Michigan University Cooley Law School professor says President Trump made a smart call by nominating Neil Gorsuch to fill a vacancy on the U.S. Supreme Court.
Devin Schindler said the selection does two things: It makes Trump look good, and it may provide a check on possible excesses created by his administration.
“For Trump, it’s a great pick, he’s well-respected in my circles, he’s an excellent writer, but he’s not a pushover,” Schindler said.
And that may help his confirmation process. Schindler said Gorsuch’s stance on government’s role will likely mean he won’t be obedient to Trump appointees.
“I think there’s going to be enough Democrats who say that we could certainly do worse and at least we have an indivigual who will stand up to administrative agencies,” Schindler said.
He’ll need some of those Senate Democrats to cross party lines to be confirmed.
His views on abortion may be the deciding factor. Schindler said it’s likely Gorsuch will be against abortion.
