COOPER TOWNSHIP (WKZO-AM) — Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s detectives are now calling the death of a woman found dumped in a field on the northern edge of Cooper Township a homicide and released the name of the victim.
Undersheriff Pali Matyas said an autopsy has confirmed the identity of the victim as 36-year-old Kelly Ann Karl, a female who had resided in Kalamazoo. The autopsy apparently also confirmed their suspicions that foul play was involved.
Her body was recovered from a remote location in the 3000 Block of West AB Avenue Thursday morning. Services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Betzler Life Story Funeral Home on Stadium Drive.
A person of interest remains jailed on unrelated charges, and the investigation continues. The name of that person has not been released by detectives. WOOD-TV is reporting that her husband, 40-year-old Kevin Stanfill is currently being held in the Kalamazoo County Jail for felony invasion of privacy and malicious destruction of property.
No indication has been made by investigators that he is implicated in his wife’s death, but few details about the case are being released at this point.
The Michigan Department of Corrections reports Stanfill has a long history of criminal activity including home invasion, larceny, operating a meth lab, weapons and other drug charges.
Matyas says more information may be released about the case this week.
