KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — Many of the tenants at the Crosstown Parkway Senior Community in Kalamazoo were happy to be moving back into their apartments following a Jan. 8 fire that led to the death of a woman.
There were plenty of smiles to go around as most of the units in the nine-story building off Crosstown Parkway have cleared city inspection and have been OK’d for reoccupation.
About 60 of the units need additional work after the seventh floor fire, and the resulting water damage caused by fire hoses. They may be reopened in a week or two.
Most of the tenants found temporary housing on their own with relatives or friends and about a dozen found temporary shelter with the help of the Red Cross.
Barbara Posey, 74, did not survive the fire, which started in her unit. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
