KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — Kalamazoo Public Safety is reminding drivers to lock up their cars and take the keys with them after a couple of motorists made it easy for a teenager to go joyriding over the weekend.
A car vanished from the 1000 block of Woodward Avenue on Saturday at 10 a.m. It was found the next day near Park and Dunkley and investigators tracked down the three girls last seen using it.
They say they were handed the keys by a fourth teenager.
Sunday morning, a second car was stolen from a church parking lot on Norrth Burdick Street. Once again, the keys had been left in the unlocked vehicle. It ended up crashing in the yard of a home on Frank Street.
A citizen tracked the juvenile and officers arrested him in the 200 block of Norway, recovering the keys.
They say it was the same teen who had also stolen the vehicle on Woodward on Saturday. He had apparently been looking for vehicles with the keys in them.
He is being held in juvenile detention.
