KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — A frightening fire in a high rise for seniors in Kalamazoo has left one person dead, dozens of others are staying with friends or relatives, and a few are waking up this morning in a temporary shelter.
Over a dozen of the 170 residents who were evacuated from the Crosstown Parkway Senior Community early Saturday morning have nowhere else to go and may remain at the YMCA, assisted by the Red Cross until the building is reopened in a few days.
Management is working to isolate the portion of the building that was damaged, restore utilities and complete any clean-ups that the Health Department says are necessary.
The victim, whose name has not been released, was an elderly woman who was trapped on the balcony of the 7th floor apartment where the fire apparently was focused. She was rescued by ladder truck and died later in the Bronson Burn unit.
They are still looking for the cause.
