KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — Kalamazoo County Health and Community Services says it’s making available to homeowners free short-term radon testing kits from now until February.
The naturally-occurring radioactive gas is the leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers and the second-leading cause of lung cancer overall.
Environmental Health Supervisor Lucas Pols said radon can seep its way from the soil into older and newer homes.
“With your older homes, you’re going to potentially have more cracks and holes in your foundation, but it can be across-the-board and it can vary from house to house,” Pols said.
The kits can be picked up at the department’s office on Gull Road and at the county’s household hazardous waste center on Lamont Avenue.
