KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — Dr. Martha Warfield was honored as she retired from the Kalamazoo School Board Thursday evening.
It was her last regular meeting before her term ends. After six years on the board, and an involvement with urban education that stretches back to the battles over desegregation in Kalamazoo in the 60’s, Warfield chose not to run for reelection.
Superintendent Michael Rice says it’s the end of 40-years of participation by the Warfield family in the district, starting with the late Dr. Charles Warfield’s tenure on the board.
She was presented with a plaque, and assured that there would always be a place for her on stage at High School Graduations.
Warfield noted that the district and board meetings have come a long way since the days of desegregation and the meetings are a lot more fun now.
Dr. Warfield is also the Vice-President of Diversity and Inclusion at WMU, and among her many duties is providing programs to help the Promise Scholars who are going to Western cope with college life.
