KALAMAZOO TOWNSHIP (WKZO-AM) — An armed robbery suspect who police say pulled off the heist but botched the getaway is nursing a bite mark from a police dog in the Kalamazoo County Jail.
Township Lt. Brian Ergang said it began just after 10 a.m. Tuesday when a 26-year-old Kalamazoo man walked into Tali’s Market at Ravine and Nichols roads, pulled out a handgun and cleaned out the cash register.
Then he went to the parking lot and forced a woman in a car to drive him away.
This is when it all went sideways.
The vehicle crashed a short distance away, which was witnessed by an off-duty Michigan State Police trooper. He was able to get a good look at the suspect and directed responding units to his escape route. A K9 tracked the suspect to the back-yard of a home near Climax and Hillsdale in the township.
He was treated and released for a minor dog bite and booked into the Kalamazoo County Jail for armed robbery, resisting, kidnapping, being a felon in possession of a gun and two gun felonies.
Formal charges are expected Wednesday.
