UNDATED (WKZO-AM) — Almost all of the school districts in southwest Michigan have announced a snow day because of the hazardous conditions on side roads and rural roads.
The cancellations started rolling in early Sunday evening. By midnight, officials from all area districts had decided that the forecast and the condition of the roads made sending out the buses just too dangerous.
Getting from point A to point B on Monday may be bit of a challenge for the rest of us as well. AAA Michigan says they have issued a statewide “commuter caution” because of the snowy conditions.
They say non-essential trips should be canceled until road conditions improve.
Plows have been focusing on main roads because that’s all they have been able to maintain as the snow has continued to fall.
Kalamazoo Road Commission Manager Joanna Johnson said that has to be their priority to provide the greatest safety to the greatest number. That means main roads come first, then primary roads, local roads, subdivision streets and cul-de-sacs are plowed in that order. The constant snow fall forced them to focus weekend efforts on the main roads.
They should be able to get to the other roads today and tomorrow.
Flights were scratched at Kalamazoo/Battle Creek International and Gerald R. Ford in Grand Rapids because the planes were grounded in Detroit or Chicago.
Heavy Snowfall at Chicago’s O’Hare and Midway forced the cancellation of 1,300 flights in that city alone Sunday because they couldn’t keep the runways clear. That means planes that should be in one location for flights today are instead stuck in Chicago or Detroit and that means more disruptions today, even if runways are cleared.
They recommend if you have a flight scheduled for today to check before heading to the airport. It might save a trip on a day when staying off the road is prefered.
