KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM)– It’s a sign of the season. Public Safety says that it’s fortunate that the occupants of a home in the 700 block of Wheaton Avenue had working smoke detectors.
They say they believe that an improperly exposed candle was the source of a fire that broke out in the second floor of the home.
Fire trucks were dispatched at 3:40 yesterday afternoon. By then the smoke detector had already alerted everyone to evacuate the building.
They were able to quickly contain and extinguish the fire.
They say candles may be traditional at Christmas time but they are also one of the reasons that this is the busiest time of the year for firefighters.
