KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM)– Lame Duck Kalamazoo County Commissioner Larry Provancher has proposed that the county start issuing their own picture ID’s to residents who aren’t drivers and for one reason or another, don’t qualify or can’t obtain a state Identification card.
Inmates coming out of prison, elderly and teenaged non-drivers, undocumented immigrants, and even foster kids and adoptees can sometimes find it difficult to get the documentation together to get a legal state ID or driver’s license.
Washtenaw County is already doing it, and so are many other cities and counties around the country.
County I.D. would be obtainable for anyone who could prove they were living in the community.
Provancher says they can base their program on Washtenaw’s model.
Board Chair John Taylor plans to put it on the agenda for their next meeting.
With just a few documents and $20, they would be available at the County Clerk’s office.
