KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — Several hundred people braved the weather to share the announcement of Western Michigan University’s postseason bowl assignment with the Broncos football team Sunday afternoon at Read Fieldhouse.
There were few doubts they were going to the Cotton Bowl after Temple’s upset win over Navy for the American Athletic Conference’s championship on Saturday, but the crowd reacted with cheering and applause when it popped up on the big screen.
The Broncos will play Wisconsin in the Cotton Bowl. The Badgers finished 8th in the final College Football Playoff rankings. WMU moved up two slots to 15th.
The fans in Kalamazoo at the watch party were soon watching themselves as ESPN had a camera crew at the fieldhouse to get the crowd reaction and interview P.J. Fleck.
At a news conference after the event, Fleck had high praise for the abilities of the Wisconsin football team and its coaches. He said they will begin work immediately preparing for the game to prepare themselves for the champions of the Big Ten’s west division.
He also said he had not talked to any other colleges about job openings.
The bowl is schduled for Jan. 2. Kickoff is currently set for 1 p.m.
