KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — Trustees have agreed to cut a $200,000 check for an educator at Portage West Middle School who was cleared of a sex crime earlier this year.
The money will be used to chip away at Kevin Doerfler‘s legal fees.
A Kalamazoo County Circuit Court jury in March found him not guilty of inappropriately touching a 13-year-old girl at the school. That incident was alleged to have occurred in a classroom last January.
Trustees approved the reimbursement Monday after a discussion in closed session.
Doerfler returned to his assistant principal post at the school earlier this year. He returned to work at the district office a month after his acquittal.
