LANSING (WKZO-AM) — Donald Trump has been firing off angry tweets about the proposed recount in Michigan and other states, calling them a scam, but Democrats counter that he was the one who railed against “the rigged voting system” prior to the vote.
Now his claim will be investigated. Especially since he claimed in an earlier tweet that there was wide-spread voter fraud in other states and that 2 million votes were cast illegally.
Wisconsin is gearing up to start their recount either later this week or early next week.
Michigan State Elections Director Chris Thomas has sent a memo to local clerks, telling them to begin identifying volunteers and gathering information on public locations where recounts could be staged in all 83 Michigan Counties, should the need arise.
Like the election itself, it will be local clerks who do the heavy lifting if a recount is ordered.
The last Statewide recount in Michigan was in 1968 to settle a referendum over Daylight Savings that was defeated by just 490 votes. The recount did not change the outcome.
The Stein campaign has to file for a recount in Pennsylvania Monday.
The Michigan State Board of Canvassers will certify the official numbers for the November election when they meet at 2:00 Monday afternoon.
The Detroit News reports that the final count will show that Donald Trump beat Hilary Clinton by 10,704 votes, out of the 4.8-million ballots cast. That’s the closest finish for a Presidential Race in Michigan history. The Green Party will have until Wednesday to file in Lansing for a recount
It’s estimated that a recount in Michigan will cost about $790,000, but it could go higher.
The Clinton Campaign has announced it will be joining the recount in Wisconsin, and participating in Pennsylvania and Michigan too if the Green Party files in those states as expected this week.
Clinton’s campaign lawyer Marc Elias says “now that a recount has been initiated, they will participate to be sure the process proceeds fairly”.
This weekend Michigan GOP Chair Ronna Romney-McDaniel announced that after checking with the National Party and the Trump campaign, they would start recruiting volunteers to serve as Republican monitors at recount locations, should they be needed.
