KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — You don’t usually expect cooking tips from the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety, but their latest news release, all three pages of it is chock full of good advice on how to prevent cooking your home to a crisp as you prepare this Thursday’s big Thanksgiving meal.
The numbers bear it out. You are four times more likely to set your house on fire on Thanksgiving than any other day of the year. It is the absolute worst for cooking fires, no other day even comes close.
Home cooking fires kill hundreds of Americans, thousands of casualties and more than half a billion dollars in property damage.
The basic rules are to pay attention to what you are doing, stay in the room as much as possible, use timers to avoid over cooking, keep flammable objects away from sources of heat, and keep kids away.
KDPS has a whole section warning about the dangers of turkey frying.
