KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — Several hundred demonstrators turned out in Bronson Park last night, not just to oppose the election of Donald Trump, but to protest the wave of hate crimes that have occurred since the election.
They fear that the things that a Trump administration might pursue to make America great again, might not be so great for them.
Jay Maddock, the Director at the Gay Lesbian Resource Center told the gathering that they are going to have to get unified and organized…because “love alone won’t protect them”. Its not enough to protect them from Trumps first 100 days, or the next 1360 days.”
He says “posting thought provoking articles in that echo-chamber Facebook with your progressive minded friends will not stop Trump from defunding Planned Parenthood,…debating the effectiveness of a safety pin will not stop trump from deporting 2 to 3 millon people when he gets into the oval office”.
He says they have to write letters to politicians, and then write more letters and when they don’t answer the letter, phone them. He says people will have to donate money and run for office themselves at at the very least vote.
After speeches in Bronson Park, the crowd marched through the downtown, and except for some chants, and a brief disruption of traffic, the event was peaceful.
