KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — Do you avoid voting because you think it will lead to Jury duty? If you do, you aren’t a very good citizen and you have succombed to a popular myth.
Jenny Hill with the Kalamazoo League for Women Voters said there are a lot of voting myths out there that just aren’t true. She said you will have to give up your driver’s license to stay off juries, because that’s where they get names, not from voter registration.
Hill said some people believe that if they “are late on their child support or if you have had a foreclosure on your home that you aren’t allowed to vote and that’s just not true.”
Hill said that others think they have to vote in every race or they spoil their ballot. She also said you may be limited in the number of candidates you can pick in any one race, but voters can vote in as many or as few races as they like.
Hill said some think that if they skip an election, “that doesn’t mean that your registration is automatically nullified, you don’t have to reregister, you are still a registered voter.”
We don’t know if they are myths or just misinformation, or just excuses made up by someone who didn’t want to vote.
Hill is also a Kalamazoo Public Schools trustee who will be running for reelection next week.
