KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — The Kalamazoo Public Library says it’s waiving fines for overdue books this week.
It’s part of the library’s “Fine Forgiveness Week.”
“If you have books or materials you’ve been holding on to because you’ve been worried about the late fees, please feel free to come in and return them,” spokesperson Farrell Howe said. “Lost or damaged material fines are not part of this program, but late fees associated with those materials are.”
The event was inspired by the story of former Benton Harbor police officer Andrew Collins, who arrested Jameel McGee with false evidence to meet a drug quota in 2005. McGee spent four years in prison, while Collins spent a little over a year behind bars. Both found forgiveness and friendship after running into each other at an unemployment office last year.
Both Collins and McGee will share their story at the Alma Powell Branch Library on West Paterson Street this Tuesday at 6 p.m.
