BENTON HARBOR (WKZO-AM) — Benton Harbor Mayor Marcus Muhammad has asked the community to remain calm following Tuesday’s fatal shooting of a suspect who they claim was first to fire on police officers.
So far, the community has complied.
Michigan State Police are investigating the shooting. Benton Harbor Police say Darius Wimberly opened fire on officers just after 2 a.m. Tuesday. The officers returned fire and killed him.
Investigators say Wimberly had two handguns during the shooting and aren’t sure if he knew he was shooting at police.
There were no other injuries, but the officer that fired the fatal shot will be on paid administrative leave during the investigation.
A candlelight vigil was held for Wimberly on Tuesday.
