LANSING (WKZO-AM) — Gov. Rick Snyder has signed a 17-bill package that will upgrade the training requirements for police officers, particularly auxiliary officers.
Snyder said one goal is to avoid the kind of issues that led to racial tension all over the nation.
“The state needs to be proactive with the highest standards (to) improve community relationships, including implicit bias training, and training on de-escalation techniques,” Snyder said.
State Sens. Margaret O’Brien, R-Portage, and Tonya Schuitmaker, R-Lawton, sponsored some of the bills and were on hand for the signing.
It will be up to the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards to enforce the new requirements.
The bill signing took place at the Michigan State Police headquarters in Lansing.
