KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — It’s not every day that a company announces its building its Corporate World Headquarters in Kalamazoo.
But then, RX Optical has always been in Kalamazoo. The firm began 70 years ago in Kalamazoo in one of the storefronts at the Kalamazoo State Theatre. They now have 53 retail outlets in Michigan and northern Indiana.
They have been located on South Park at Howard for decades. On Thursday, they broke ground on a $6 million two-story addition to their Kalamazoo campus.
The most-visible building is a low-slung brown brick building on Park Street, but there are several other buildings behind that which are not readily visible from the street.
Vice President George Jepson said the expansion will create nearly two dozen new full time jobs with a number of spin-off jobs giving a boost to the local economy.
“it will include our optician and optometry training facilities, all of their insurance billing departments, their executive offices and allows them more opportunities to expand (as we add new outlets),” Jepson said.
