KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — A report by the Campaign to End Homelessness says Michigan’s homeless rate declined in 2015.
Kelly Rose with the Michigan State Housing Development Authority said several factors pushed overall homelessness six percent lower last year.
“We’ve been really trying over the past two years to have a very strategic way to invest in permanent housing resources and to really assess those who need the help the most,” Rose said.
But she also says the problem hasn’t gone away.
“We had almost 70,000 citizens that experienced homelessness in 2015,” Rose said. “There are a lot of our citizens out there that are struggling and we’re working to get them housed every day.”
Veteran homelessness was down 15 percent.
Over 20,000 people experienced homelessness in west and southwest Michigan, according to the report.
