EVANSTON, ILLINOIS (WKZO-AM) — Zach Terrell threw for 218 yards, one touchdown and added 40 on the ground, and Jamauri Bogan rushed for 103 yards on 22 carries and a 4th down touchdown as the Western Michigan Broncos upset Big Ten opponent Northwestern 22-21 on a sunny Saturday afternoon at Ryan Field at Evanston, Illinois. WMU, a 4.5 point underdog, used a balanced attack to stun a Wildcat team picked to finish second in the Big Ten West division.
Terrell was 26 of 36 for his 218 yards and no interceptions as the Bronco offense did not turn the ball over all afternoon. WR Corey Davis led the Bronco receivers with 7 catches for 70 yards. Northwestern was led by running back Justin Jackson with 124 yards and all three Wildcat touchdowns on 23 carries. Receiver Austin Carr with 5 catches for 75 yards. Quarterback Clayton Thorson completed 15 of 22 passes for 196 yards, but could not find the end zone.
Bronco true freshman Butch Hampton kicked 3 field goals in 4 tries, but that first attempt was from 50 yards out and the ball hit the crossbar and fell short, denying Hampton and the Broncos on their first scoring attempt.
After this big win, the Broncos head home to host North Carolina Central in the Waldo Stadium opener next Saturday. It’s also CommUniversity Night at Waldo, with tailgaiting starting at 4:30 and kickoff at 7 p.m. Catch the pregame festivities and the game itself starting with the Bronco Countdown Pregame Show with Robin Hook and John Creek beginning at 6 p.m. on Z96-5 and the Bronco Radio Network.
