KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — Western Michigan University will be holding the grand opening of its new Valley Dining Center on Thursday.
President John Dunn and other dignitaries will cut the ribbon at the facility at 3 p.m. Self-guided tours will take place until 6 p.m.
“Our students are really excited,” Dining Services Director Judy Gipper said. “We’re already starting to serve the fall welcome students on our campus and they are just thrilled with what they’re seeing and the food they’re tasting.”
It represents a seismic shift in how Western feeds its students on the Kalamazoo campus.
“Done are the old days of the cafeteria, where food is served in the back of the house,” Gipper said. “Now, students see their food prepared and, in many cases, prepared to order.”
The $36 million facility features nine micro-restaurants with each serving a different type of cuisine.
