CARY LAKE (WKZO-AM) — Branch County officials want to know why a man waited six to seven hours to wait before reporting that he had been in a car that went out of control and splashed into Cary Lake, and that the driver was still in the car.
Undersheriff Keith Eichler says a man came into the sheriff’s department before 9 a.m. Monday, reporting that it had happened about 1 a.m. or 2 a.m.
The victim is a 41-year-old man from Bronson, but his name was not initially released.
Police recovered the body and wanted to wait to lift the convertible, which was flipped on its roof in about three feet of water with air bags to preserve any evidence that might still be there.
An autopsy is planned. Toxicology tests could take well over a month.
Investigators aren’t saying the passenger waited to report it, what his relationship to the driver was, whether drugs or alcohol were involved, apparently because they don’t know.
The investigation is ongoing.
