PORTAGE (WKZO-AM) — Both the burglars and the victim are under investigation after thieves hacked their way through the roof into the Pure Wellness Apothecary sometime early Saturday morning.
Portage Public Safety officers were dispatched to respond to an alarm at the business in the 5000 block of Sprinkle Road. They found the back door ajar and went in to search for any suspects.
What they discovered inside was what appeared to be a large amount of marijuana. The officers obtained a warrant and seized approximately 20 pounds of the drug, which was packaged for distribution. They also seized $3,700 cash and two vending machines allegedly used by the business to distribute marijuana.
Police are investigating to determine if the owner was operating as an illegal dispensary under the city’s current ordinance, which allows state-approved caregivers to operate out of residential areas, but does not allow dispensaries.
It’s not clear how much marijuana may have been stolen prior to the arrival of the officers. The burglar or burglars remain at large.
